The new agency – questions and answers
Here are some of the main questions about the move of the Agency for the Legal Deposit Libraries to Edinburgh.
- Why has the Agency for the Legal Deposit Libraries moved?
- Why Scotland and not another London location?
- When should publishers start delivering to Edinburgh?
- What support can publishers and distributors expect from the Edinburgh agency?
- Will there be financial support for increased delivery costs?
- Will Irish legal deposit publications go to Edinburgh?
- Can we deliver in bulk to the Edinburgh location?
Why has the Agency for the Legal Deposit Libraries moved? The London premises were no longer suitable and it was not cost-effective to run the operation from there.
Why Scotland and not another London location? The five legal deposit libraries who run the agency wanted to integrate the agency processes with their own. This was best achieved by co-locating within a library. The National Library of Scotland was the only one of the five with facilities the agency could move into.
When should publishers start delivering to Edinburgh?A small sample of publishers was asked to deposit in Edinburgh for 2 February 2009. The remaining publishers were required to deposit from 2 March 2009. We are writing to all known publishers and distributors with relevant dates and will post information on this website.
What support can publishers and distributors expect from the Edinburgh agency? The agency's aim is to develop closer working relationships with publishers and distributors. We will work to improve flexibility in the way the agency works with the publishing community. We hope to develop collaborative working practices that will benefit everyone involved.
Will there be financial support for increased delivery costs? We regret that we cannot provide financial support. Legal deposit legislation makes it clear that publishers should deposit publications free of charge. The costing of the new agency does not include provision for payment for delivery of goods to Edinburgh.
Should Irish publishers send publications to the agency? No, publishers will still deposit five copies of Irish material with the Irish Copyright Agency, c/o Trinity College Library, College Street, Dublin 2. It will then be forwarded to the Agency for the Legal Deposit Libraries in Edinburgh for onward distribution.
Can we deliver in bulk to the Edinburgh location? The Edinburgh location gives us better delivery options – but there are some restrictions on parking and delivery. See the location page for more information. Please note, there is no provision for vehicles larger than 3 tonnes.
